Daybreak reached a major milestone today. While many U.S. housing markets are slowing, Daybreak is seeing the opposite. On December 18, 2007, Kennecott Land rolled out the red carpet—complete with an ice sculpture and a ribbon‑cutting—to welcome the community’s 1,000th homeowner.
Opened: ~2.5 years ago | Top‑selling community in Utah | 12.5% of SLC single‑family permits (2006) | 11% of county housing starts (Q3, 2007) | Job growth: 4.4% (Salt Lake County) vs. 1.4% U.S.
Market Momentum
Since opening about two and a half years ago, Daybreak has become Utah’s top‑selling community. In 2006, Daybreak builders accounted for 12.5% of single‑family permits in Salt Lake County. In addition, third‑quarter data from Metrostudy shows Daybreak leading with 11% of total housing starts. (Fourth‑quarter data is expected later today.) Strong local job growth—4.4% in Salt Lake County compared to 1.4% nationally—continues to support demand.

Meet the 1,000th Homeowners: Neil & Janie Clark

Neil and Janie Clark aren’t just the 1,000th homeowners—they’re also the second branch of their family to move to Daybreak. About a year and a half earlier, their daughter Kim Duffy and her husband Dr. Tim Duffy moved in with their three children. In fact, their 16‑year‑old granddaughter Brittany eagerly helped Grandma and Grandpa—tracking listings and touring homes with them.
Originally from California, the Clarks first lived in Cottonwood Heights. However, they found themselves spending most of their time at Daybreak with family. As empty‑nesters, they wanted a single‑level (rambler) home with main‑floor living and plenty of room to entertain. Ultimately, they chose the Lancaster by Destination Homes—one of 20 rambler floor plans offered by Daybreak builders in 2007.

From Kennecott Land
Peter McMahon, President of Kennecott Land, recognized the first wave of residents:
“The nearly 3,000 people who have made their home at Daybreak are in effect West Bench pioneers — people who are living Kennecott Land’s vision of an enduring community. The Daybreak difference is that it is a place, not just a home, where people can live and work and recreate for generations to come.”
