It’s not every day that you will see giant pumpkins floating in Daybreak’s Oquirrh Lake. The Sixth Annual Mountain Valley Seed Ginormous Pumpkin Regatta is coming to Daybreak in South Jordan, Utah. Pumpkins weighing between 500 and 1,500 pounds will be converted into watercrafts and raced across the northern portion of Oquirrh Lake on Saturday, October 22nd.
Preparation for the Ginormous Pumpkin Regatta began months ago as growers meticulously cared for their seedlings in anticipation for harvest season. This past weekend growers gathered for the official weigh-in, where Ed Dennis took home the grand prize with a pumpkin that tipped the scales at a whopping 1,491.5 pounds. That’s a lot of pumpkin pies! His pumpkin beat out the closest competitors by nearly 500 pounds. Based on the size of this pumpkin, it places him in the #2 spot for all-time pumpkin growers in Utah.
Next, the growers will bring their ginormous pumpkins to Daybreak, where they will be hollowed out into watercrafts and set afloat in Oquirrh Lake. Growers will don entertaining costumes as they paddle their way to victory. After the race, the pumpkins are donated to Utah’s Hogle Zoo for the annual Giant Pumpkin Stomp, where they will be handed over to the elephants.
