High-end bakery opens in the SoDa Row retail district

January 21, 2011
South Jordan, UT — Kennecott’s Daybreak community announced today the addition of Swirly Girls Gourmet Bakery to its growing list of retail establishments in its SoDa Row retail district at 11248 Kestrel Rise Road. Swirly Girls specializes in a variety of delightful desserts made from only the highest-quality ingredients including cakes, cupcakes, dessert bars, rolls, cookies, danishes, croissants, and hand-dipped chocolates.
Swirly Girls will hold a grand opening event on Saturday, January 22, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. with free samples, door prizes and a grand prize drawing.
The creative minds behind the bakery do not live far from their first location. Debi Jensen and Amberleigh Farrell are both Daybreak residents and friends who share a love for baking and catering. The home catering business they opened together was their first taste of success and it motivated them to expand their company.
“We are excited to open our first bakery in the Daybreak community because this is where we call home,” said Jensen.  “Daybreak has all the components that we were looking for to make our business successful because it combines close proximity to shops, restaurants and amenities from residents’ homes.”
Daybreak has become very popular with home buyers and entrepreneurs because of the convenient access to businesses and amenities. This approach to community planning provides the social connections of a small town with the added convenience of reducing car trips to more distant retail destinations. The central location of SoDa Row puts neighborhood conveniences, like Swirly Girls, within a 5-minute walk for many Daybreak residents and the hundreds of people who work in the area. In addition to the Rio Tinto Regional Center, which houses more than 500 Rio Tinto employees, University of Utah Healthcare will open a new medical center later this year just two blocks away that will bring more than 300 medical professionals and hundreds more patients to the area every day that will help create a vibrant community.
“The SoDa Row retail district has become a gathering place for residents in the southwest corner of the valley,” said Kennecott Commercial Development Manager Scott Schwendiman. “People are eager to support local businesses and want unique places and products that have character. The businesses that are choosing to locate here are anxious to be part of Daybreak because of strong demographics and strong growth, and they see what is possible when quality development meets committed vision.”
Daybreak was recently recognized by the National Association of Home Builders as the national Community of the Year at their annual Best in American Living Awards (BALA), and also received a Platinum award for Smart Growth. The BALA awards recognize builders, developers, architects, and designers for their innovations in sustainable development, design, and planning that create great places to live while balancing the social, environmental, and economic needs of the community. Village Centers like SoDa Row that provide gathering places and bring everyday conveniences into the community are prime examples of smart growth planning. Daybreak was also ranked as the sixth best selling community in the most recent master planned community survey conducted by Real Estate Research firm Robert Charles Lesser & Company (RCLCO). Nearly 1 in 5  new homes in utah is built in Daybreak.
